By now you’ve probably heard about the riots currently crippling Egypt. You may have even heard that the Egyptian museum in Cairo caught fire along with its precious artifacts. Thankfully, that last one was just a rumor. According to Zahi Hawass, the secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, everything is safe. Although there have been some break-ins and some broken artifacts in the museum, they will all be restored and nothing was stolen. That’s because a large number of Egyptians have taken upon themselves to protect the museum and tombs and the ancient treasures within them.
